An agreement between Tesla and Ford will give Ford electric vehicles access to the North American Supercharger network. Future models will feature Tesla’s charging format.
Tesla had already paved the way for compatibility with other vehicles in Europe and China. In North America, few Superchargers are equipped with cables compatible with the Combo CCS plugs used by other manufacturers, limiting the scope of a gradual opening up of the network.
This agreement with Tesla puts Ford in an excellent position, with access to the complete network of over 12,000 Superchargers in the USA and Canada. Owners of the F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach E or e-Transit will be able to get an adapter to plug into the entire network.
And that’s not all. From 2025, Ford’s new electric models will come standard with a charging socket compatible with the Tesla connector format. A format that the automaker is seeking to transform into a standard under the name NACS (North American Charging Standard), as opposed to CCS (Combined Charging System). Conversely, Ford vehicles will have to use an adapter to charge on the CCS-equipped network.
The Tesla Supercharger network covers the whole of the United States and Canada. There are thousands of Superchargers strategically located along major highways, in urban centers and other popular locations. These charging stations are usually located close to restaurants, shopping centers and other facilities.
Tesla Superchargers use fast-charging technology to recharge a car much faster than a conventional outlet. They can deliver up to 250 kilowatts of power, enabling vehicles to quickly recharge their batteries and get back on the road in minutes.
Tesla continues to expand its network of Superchargers across North America, adding new charging stations in strategic locations to make it easier for drivers to travel long distances. Superchargers can be located using the Tesla mobile app.
